Mega gold and other fairy tales

Once upon a time

Isn’t that how all good stories begin?  We definitely have a wile e. coyote; but I guess that crosses over into cartoon land!

We quite often refer to claim jumpers,
mostly in the context of recreational panning
in ignorance of the law.  We recently ran across
a much more serious situation.

We find claims for people; a lot of them friends and family.  Last fall we chanced upon a large claim on some historically proven ground.  A group of eight claimants acquired this land for a very small fee; in October staked the claim, filing with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in December.

We helped them out to make sure all the proper paperwork was filed, and in December we announced on our website congratulations for a claim secured on North Rapid Creek.  The claim totaled 160 acres for 8 claimants.

We’re always keeping an eye on all of our claims, and in doing so noticed that a claim by the name of Mega Gold had been located in January over the top of this parties’ North Rapid Placer.

The claim, as registered at BLM, was listed under several holding companies, most of them using botanical names such as Buttercup, Lilac, etc.  Further research showed a connection to a Minnesota company by the name of Sunset Valley Mining Company.

We notified the claimholders and advised them of the situation that we had found.  Their North Rapid Placer was listed for sale on the internet as Mega Gold, located on Rapid Creek in the Black Hills!  The claim is divided into 10-acre parcels ranging in price from $9000 to $20,000.

At least our friends know they got their monies’ worth!

The website also claims they test panned out a 2-ounce nugget; that this claim is along Rapid Creek and fully accessible by the Rochford Road.  We’ve seen their map, which places the claim exactly on top of the North Rapid Placer.  The Mickelson Trail does run through the claim, but that trail is for non-motorized vehicles.  There is a lot of misinformation in the advertisement, not to mention misleading photos, so we’re warning you to be careful when shopping for a claim.

We’ve done further research on this company and notice a lot of complaints registered with the Gold Prospectors of America, the U.S. Forest Service and BLM.  Our friends also registered a complaint with IC3s and hired an attorney to notify the company.

Beware… this company holds claims in South Dakota, California, Oregon and Montana.  A little research has already shown their claims to be questionable at best.  Mention is made of several lawsuits pending in various locations!

Do you recall a previous blog cauctioning prospectors how rare it is to find “visible” gold in a creek?  Part of the legal paperwork demands return of that 2-ounce nugget from a test pan!  This reminds me of the publicity of the first gold rush to the Black Hills:  “gold for the pickin!’”

Twenty-five years of recreational prospecting… and we were fools enough to hold down jobs to make a living!

  1. After much thought about your message on these claim jumpers I have decided to get educated and spread the word on illegal claim jumping activity. Sunset Valley Mining Company was sent a legal document showing senior dominance by a group of placer miners and another lawyer generated letter stating mineral rights with a special note on attempting to sell 16 each 10 acre lots that does not belong to them. BLM and Black Hills Forest Service have been contacted, supplied documents, and are now fully aware of Sunset Valley Mining Co. claim jumping activity.

It appears the only way to make these claim jumpers remove their Mega Gold sale Web Site is to take legal action. This will probably be generated by an unsuspecting buyer or legal mineral rights individuals. I don't know all about various laws coming into play here, however, I am pretty sure that someone trying to sell someone elses claim on the Internet is flat wrong.

We do need to become educated about our claim neighbors. If possible meet in person in the field. Carry legal documents pertaining to your claim. Educate the folks that wander and are removing precious metals. In some cases 0 tolerance may require a call to the Sheriff so have your cell phone. If they truly appear genuine about being clueless explain the serious nature of their tresspass. I have contacted Sheriffs departments in each County our claims are located and they express they will fully aid and assist in illegal activity of claim jumpers.

Sunset Valley Mining Co. has a closed MMC serial number. The number they post does not exist. Most of the pictures appear to be of Rapid Creek and I know for a fact no monuments exist according to BLM requirements. It's time to put the fakes and pretenders out of lives.

  3. The claims appear to be legal claims. I would want Sunset Valley to prove access and mineralization. We have been to this area and have prospected from the campground all the way through Section 9 and personally only found a fleck. This is extremely rugged terrain.
Depending on the price you are paying, there are better, proven claims available. The reason these were not staked by others is that no one, that we know of, has ever found anything there. The lode has better potential than placer.

    1. Another potential victim forewarned! Please contact us before buying... we will give you an honest opinion. Also, if you wish, we will forward inquiries to people who have bought claims, people who have been overstaked, etc. If you don't believe us, you'll want to believe them!

    2. All claims along Rochford Road/Rapid Creek are long held claims. Sunset Valley Mining has been notified. Please be advised: If you make a purchase from SVM. on any of these claims. You will be in violation of federal law if you removed any minerals.

  5. My claims are overstaked by them at this moment. Calling SVM only allows me to leave a message. Those claims down the creek from rochford are all illegal. I've just started to try to take care of the problem they're causing.

  6. I have one of those claims on Rapid Creek that's for sale right now on the Sunset Valley Mining website. I know the owners of claims 1 thru 6, and we all had them before SVM claimed them. I just found out about their website. I had only been monitoring E-Bay until now. I've heard nothing can be done until they sell a claim and commit interstate fraud. What a shame someone has to get taken for a ride before legal action can start. I'll be calling the FBI if that happens. Calling SVM only allows me to leave a message. I'll keep researching this problem and at the same time try to get more chat on the net about their ongoing scam.
Teresa and Bob have a great site here. Lots of important information in one place. SVM led me to this blog but that's the only good thing I have to say about them. I don't have a solution for this problem. When I get one, I'll post it here.

    1. Teresa and Bob want to add that as far as we have researched, all claims by SVM on Rapid Creek above and below Rochford (Mega Gold and Blueberries) are overstaked existing claims.

Please, PLEASE contact us at hillshistory1876@gmail.com before you send money! I don't know anyone who can afford tying up several thousand $$ while they await some kindof action!

Bureau of Land Management, Montana office, is accepting complaints against either SVM or Rock Properties.

  7. Update........ SVM called back shortly after I left them a message today. While they seem sincere in their ignorance of overstaking me, Kymberly wanted me to send them my paperwork on the claim and they would clear up the matter. After initially agreeing to this, I e-mailed them that I would not. The paperwork is all properly filed with the proper agencies. It's all public record and I will not do the legal legwork for them. They should have already done this research prior to staking the claims in the first place. I'm sure they would just have a team of attorneys look for any discrepancy in the paperwork to drag this out and steal the claim if they can. They'll get no help with that from me. Whether this turns out good or bad, I'll keep everyone informed.

  8. Good thinking Tom... and I would be surprised to see anything "clear up" since our friends' Mega Gold is still listed after contact from friends' attorney a year ago!

A word of caution to claim owners -- spring approaches and that's usually when photos are taken for SVM website. Do not confront someone on your claim that you suspect is representing SVM! U.S. Forest Service is multi-use property and taking photos not a crime. However, if they are panning, sluicing or any type of mining activity, Pennington Co. Sheriff's dept. has stated they will respond to complaints.

  10. Mega Gold claims are on North Rapid Creek, not Rapid Creek as I believe the description reads.
